The beautiful Greek island of Skopelos is the largest of the Northern Sporades located in the blue waters of the Aegean Sea. I first visited the island 18 years ago in 1993 and it has drawn me back for year after year ever since. Over that period I’ve seen many changes on Skopelos – some good and some not so good – but the character of the island and its people have remained unchanged.
Skopelos is known as ‘the-green-and-blue island’ because of its verdant forests which cover much of island and the crystal clear blue waters which surround it. Much of the coastline is formed of rocky cliffs rising sheer from the surrounding seas but there are also many lovely beaches and coves to discover and explore.
But there is so much more to Skopelos than beaches and sunbathing…
There are the beautiful stepped lanes and alleyways of Skopelos Town itself to wander through, the monasteries dotted over the hill of Palouki across the bay, and walks throughout the interior of the island that promise a new discovery or view with every turn.
I hope, in this blog, to share some of the beauty of the island and my thoughts and feelings engendered by my own discoveries over the years. I hope my ‘reflections’ will be entertaining and informative though I can’t promise any great works of literature or even any regularity of posting!
Thanks for reading!
